Apple Chief Design Officer Sir Jony Ive in collaboration with renowned industrial designer Marc Newson designed a carbon neutral diamond ring for RED auction. The one-of-a-kind diamond ring was grown at the facilities of FTL’s portfolio company - Diamond Foundry.
By taking advantage of the latest growing and sustainable technologies, Ive & Newson designed a ring that is completely made of diamond. The team at Diamond Foundry was faced with a challenge: to create a block of diamond with the dimensions necessary and to be polished into a ring of this size. “To create this, it required coaxing the first ten atoms of a layer into believing that a certain rare metal is a diamond, these atoms would assemble into real diamond and allow the creation of diamond blocks of previously unprecedented size.” Such process was not previously considered possible. However through this process and Diamond Foundry’s plasma reactor technology, the company managed to create the firstdiamond blocks of the required size for the design project. The finished ring has between 2000-3000 facets which have never been seen before on a single piece.
The (RED) Diamond Ring was auctioned by Sotheby’s in Miami on the 5th of December. All the proceeds will go toward the fight against AIDS.
